Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence)

Driver CPC (certificate of professional competence) came into effect for bus and minibus drivers on the 10th September 2008 and for truck drivers on the 10th of September 2009. This affects both new and existing drivers.

Professional Driver Training is an RSA approved training centre in Sligo, delivering CPC training to both new drivers and existing drivers.

Our Driver CPC Courses are running Sligo and include:

  • Course Manual and comprehensive hand outs

  • Practical and relevant knowledge and advice
Subjects Covered:

  • Control of the vehicle and Eco-driving techniques – (Module 1)
  • Minimising risks and managing emergencies – (Module 2)
  • Health and Safety of the professional driver – (Module 3)
  • Role of the professional driver in transport – (Module 4)
  • The Professional Truck Driver – (Module 5)
  • The Professional Bus Driver –   (Module 6)

Existing Coach/Minibus Drivers

For existing drivers who have held a coach or minibus licence before the 10th September 2008 you will have acquired rights and you will automatically get your CPC Licence without having to take a test.

In order to keep your CPC current you will have to complete 35 hours of training over the next 5 years which amounts to 7 hours per year (1 day per year). This is just training and does not involve any exams.

Existing Truck Drivers

For existing drivers who currently hold a full truck licence before the 10th September 2009 you will have acquired rights and you will automatically get your CPC Licence without having to take a test.

In order to keep your CPC current you will have to complete 35 hours of training over the next 5 years which amounts to 7 hours per year (1 day per year). This is just training and does not involve any exams.

Becoming a Professional Truck Driver
For anyone thinking about becoming a professional truck driver, now would be a good time to obtain a Driver CPC Licence.

New Coach/Minibus Drivers

For new drivers wishing to become coach or minibus drivers, since the 10th September 2008 you will have to do the CPC Examination in addition to the current driving test.

This is made up of:

  • Bus theory test (current theory test)
  • CPC theory tests (case studies)
  • CPC practical test (usually done after the driving test)
  • On road driving test (current bus/ minibus driving test)

After completing all of the above new drivers will be subject to 35 hours of periodic training the same as the existing drivers which amounts to 7 hours per year with no exams just training.
